Encouraging a Growth Mindset
At Wee are Wise Daycare we care deeply about the significant impact daily experiences have on the developing minds of the children entrusted under our care. Therefore, we are committed to encouraging what Carol S. Dweck, Ph.D. defines as a "Growth Mindset." The "Growth Mindset" is the belief that traits and abilities can be developed through learning. This mindset "allows people to thrive during some of the most challenging times of their lives."
Wee are Wise Daycare encourages a Growth Mindset by acknowledging a child's efforts and encouraging them to keep working at their chosen task.
We label behavior rather than labeling a child. For example, we may say, "Wow, you are working hard at putting that puzzle together!" Labeling a child is avoided whether that label is good or bad.
In addition, we encourage a Growth Mindset with stories that promote perseverance and persistence and avoid stories that use labels, whether good or bad.
"Infants Stretch their skills daily. Not just ordinary skills, but the most difficult skills of a lifetime, like learning to walk and talk. They walk, they fall, they get up. They just barge forward. What could put an end to this exuberant learning? The fixed mindset."
“....[N]o matter what their ability is, effort is what ignites that ability and turns it into accomplishment.” -Carol S. Dweck,Ph.D, Mindset: The New Psychology of Success
